Tasked with creating a unique staircase against a black batten-style walling, we embarked on a design journey defined by contrast and balance. Realising the need to soften the stark backdrop, we utilised the ancient Japanese technique, Shou Sugi Ban, which textured and nuanced the black walling, maintaining its modern lines.

The heart of the project, the floating Baltic Birch staircase, brought a warm, light counterpoint to the darker walling. This choice resulted in an intriguing interplay of light and shadow, rough and smooth, creating a sense of floating steps in the stairwell.
